Getting a ride
Grab lists Phu Quoc among its locations in Vietnam; the page we read on 12 October 2026 does not say which Grab services run there, so open the app on arrival to see what it offers. Green SM, the electric taxi service known in Vietnamese as Xanh SM, has a Phu Quoc taxi page dated February 2025. The airport names Xanh SM, Mai Linh, Vinasun and Saigon Phu Quoc Taxi as common taxi operators on the island, with a taxi pick-up area outside the arrivals terminal.
The airport's transport page gives estimates: by taxi, about 20–25 minutes and VND 180,000–220,000 to Duong Dong, about 25–30 minutes and VND 200,000–250,000 to the An Thoi area; by ride-hailing, VND 150,000–220,000 to Duong Dong. These were the figures on 12 October 2026 and they vary with time and demand. The airport advises asking for an estimate or checking that the meter is on, using licensed taxis with clear logos, and keeping ride-hailing payments inside the app.

Buses
The airport says public buses link the terminal with Duong Dong and An Thoi, stopping in front of arrivals, with fares of VND 20,000–30,000 and journeys of about 30–45 minutes. They stop often and have little room for luggage, so they suit a light bag better than a family's suitcases.
VinBus publishes an interactive route lookup for the island. VinWonders, which runs the theme parks in the north, keeps an English page of bus times to VinWonders, Grand World and Vinpearl Safari. Schedules change with the season; check the lookup on the day rather than relying on a screenshot.

Maps and addresses
Google Maps and OpenStreetMap both cover the island. Since 1 July 2025 official addresses use the new names — "Phu Quoc Special Zone, An Giang" — while many business listings, signs and older pages keep "Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang" and the former ward or commune. If a search fails, try the former name: Duong Dong, An Thoi, Duong To, Ham Ninh, Cua Duong, Bai Thom, Ganh Dau or Cua Can.
Download the island for offline use before a day in the national park or at sea, where a phone signal cannot be taken for granted. A saved pin for your hotel is the quickest way to show a driver where you are going.

Weather and sea conditions
The official forecaster is the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting at nchmf.gov.vn, in Vietnamese. Its site has marine forecasts for the next 24 hours as well as land forecasts, and it is the source the port authority links to. Check the marine forecast the day before a ferry crossing or an island boat trip.
The airport's tips page advises checking the forecast before travelling and booking ahead in the peak season from November to April. When strong wind is forecast, the special zone's disaster-prevention command posts notices on its portal, and the port authority can stop fast boats, as it did on 20 November 2025.

Money
The airport's tips page says the Vietnamese dong is the official means of payment on Phu Quoc and that visitors can exchange money at the airport, at banks mainly in Duong Dong and central An Thoi, or at authorised exchange counters. Some tour and hotel sites quote prices in US dollars; you will still pay most local bills in dong.
For a reference rate before you change money, Vietcombank publishes its daily rates in English. A bank's posted rate is not the rate a hotel or a counter will give you, but it shows how far off an offer is.

When an app is the wrong tool
The airport's tips page says taxis and ride-hailing are common and easy to use in Duong Dong, An Thoi and along the main roads. If you are heading to Ganh Dau, the national park, Ham Ninh or a remote beach, agree a return time with a driver or a taxi company before you go rather than counting on a car appearing in the app later. After dark, the same applies to the northern parks.
Weather apps on your phone draw on global models; for a decision about a boat, the national marine forecast and the operator's own notice matter more. And no map app knows whether a ferry is running — the operator's site does; see ferries and airlines.
