The 30-day Phu Quoc exemption, as the airport states it
The airport's visa page, in English and read on 12 October 2026, says that foreigners, and Vietnamese citizens holding foreign passports, who enter, leave and stay on Phu Quoc are exempt from a visa for a temporary stay of up to 30 days. It names two cases in which the exemption applies:
- You arrive on Phu Quoc directly from abroad, by air or by sea.
- You enter Vietnam at another international border gate, stay inside that gate's transit area, and continue your journey to Phu Quoc.
The same page adds three limits. The 30 days count from the date of entry. The exemption applies only on Phu Quoc. If you want to stay longer than 30 days, or to travel from Phu Quoc to other provinces and cities of Vietnam, you need a Vietnamese visa obtained under immigration rules.
Behind the airport's wording sit three texts. Law 51/2019/QH14 added a visa exemption for coastal economic zones that have an international airport and a boundary separate from the mainland. Government Resolution 80/NQ-CP of 25 May 2020 applied it to Phu Quoc from 1 July 2020. Decree 75/2020/NĐ-CP says a visitor in such a zone who needs to go elsewhere in Vietnam applies for a visa through an organisation or individual in Vietnam that invites or sponsors them. All three were written when Phu Quoc belonged to Kien Giang. We found no 2025–2026 text restating them for the special zone; the airport describes the exemption as current.

Transit through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City
The transit case is where travellers most often go wrong. The airport describes it as entering through another international border gate and staying inside that gate's transit area before continuing to Phu Quoc. A domestic connection that takes you out through immigration and into the domestic terminal is a different thing. Some secondary guides go further and say that any domestic leg disqualifies you; sources differ on the details, so do not rely on a blog for this.
Ask your airline, before you buy the ticket and preferably in writing, whether your connection keeps you in the transit area all the way to Phu Quoc. If the answer is unclear, an e-visa that covers the whole country removes the question.
Ask the airline in writing whether your connection counts as staying in the transit area, and keep its answer with your travel documents.

The e-visa portal
A notice on the Vietnam Immigration Department's older portal, evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, says that from 08:00 on 11 November 2024 (GMT+7) the electronic visa portal operates on two new domains: thithucdientu.gov.vn and evisa.gov.vn. Those are the addresses to use. On 12 October 2026 both new domains refused our checking tool, so we list them on the strength of the Immigration Department's notice, which did load. The airport's page describes the e-visa as valid for up to 90 days, for a single or multiple entries, and suggests completing it before the trip.
Government Resolution 127/NQ-CP of 2023, which opened e-visas to citizens of all countries, lists Phu Quoc airport and Duong Dong seaport among the checkpoints where e-visa holders may enter, as published at the time; the text still names Kien Giang.
Many commercial sites sell Vietnam visa services under names that look official. Use the government portal: type the address yourself and check that it ends in .gov.vn before you enter passport or card details.

Nationwide visa-free stays
Separate from the island rule, Vietnam lets citizens of some countries enter without a visa anywhere in the country. The airport's visa page lists a 45-day exemption, regardless of passport type or purpose, for 13 countries: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Belarus.
Government Resolution 229/NQ-CP of 8 August 2025 granted a 45-day exemption for tourism to citizens of another 12 European countries — Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland — from 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028, Báo Văn Hóa reported. The airport page does not mention this second group. Sources differ in what they list, so check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list for your own passport before relying on either.
Bilateral agreements cover other countries, including several ASEAN neighbours, with different day counts. We do not repeat those counts here because they vary by country and change; the ministry's list is the reference.

When the Phu Quoc exemption is the wrong choice
- You plan to visit the mainland on the same trip — even a day trip by boat to Ha Tien takes you outside the zone the exemption covers.
- Your route reaches Phu Quoc on a domestic flight after passing through immigration elsewhere.
- You may want to stay longer than 30 days, or to leave and come back.
- Your airline cannot confirm that your connection keeps you in the transit area.
In each of these cases an e-visa that covers the whole country is simpler than trying to change your status after you arrive. If you hold a passport from a country on a nationwide exemption list, check whether that exemption covers your whole trip before applying for anything.
We do not give individual visa advice and cannot contact the immigration authorities for you. For a decision on your own case, the Immigration Department and the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your country are the bodies that answer.
Common questions
Questions readers send
Can I travel from Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City on the 30-day exemption?
No. The airport's visa page says the exemption applies only on Phu Quoc. Travelling on to other provinces or cities needs a Vietnamese visa.
Is evisa.gov.vn the official e-visa portal?
Yes. A notice from the Vietnam Immigration Department says the e-visa portal has run on evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn since 11 November 2024. Check that the address ends in .gov.vn before you pay.
Can the 30 days be extended?
The airport says that to stay longer than 30 days you need an appropriate visa under immigration rules. Plan for that before you arrive rather than near the end of your stay.
Does the exemption still apply now that Phu Quoc is a special zone?
The airport describes it as current on its visa page, read on 12 October 2026. We found no new legal text restating it for the special zone and will update this page if one appears.
