The north of Phu Quoc

The northern half of Phu Quoc holds most of the national park, the Ganh Dau cape facing Cambodian waters, the long beach at Bai Dai, the theme parks and the private hospital in the north-west. This page links their official pages and says what each is good for.

Phu Quoc National Park

The national park covers most of the island's north and east. Its own overview page gives Decision 91/2001/QĐ-TTg of 8 June 2001 as its founding act and an area of 36,262 ha, with 1,397 plant species and 480 animal species recorded; the provincial tourism portal gives a smaller area of 31,422 ha, about 70% of the island. Sources differ, so we give both. The park is part of the Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve, listed by UNESCO with a nomination year of 2006.

The park's page adds that forested land covers about 97% of the park and about 63% of the island's natural area. It counts 270 rare plant species, 26 of them in the Vietnam Red Data Book (2007), and 12 plants named after Phu Quoc itself, such as the Phu Quoc croton. If the forest interests you more than the beaches, the overview page, in Vietnamese, lists the forest types by area and names the species the park works to protect.

The park's site is mostly about management and conservation rather than visiting. Roads cross the forest, and rules on entering protected areas apply; if you plan to walk off the road, ask a licensed guide or the park first.

Ganh Dau and Bai Dai

Ganh Dau is the north-western cape, about 30 km from Duong Dong, VnExpress reported in 2021. From the rocks you can see Cambodian islands; Hon Nan is about 3 km away. The cape also has a temple to Nguyen Trung Truc, where local people come to pray for safety. The same report warns that the rock surfaces at the cape can be slippery; wear shoes with grip if you climb out on them.

South of the cape, Bai Dai runs for 15 km from Ganh Dau to Cua Can, according to the provincial tourism portal. Large resorts and the theme parks are along its northern part. Like Bai Truong, it faces west and takes the south-west wind in the rainy season.

The theme parks

Three parks in the north publish their information on one official site, vinwonders.com: VinWonders Phu Quoc, Vinpearl Safari and Grand World. Hours, show times and ticket rules change with the season and differ between pages on the same site — for Vinpearl Safari, pages we read in October 2026 gave two different sets of opening hours — so read the park's own page on the day you go rather than a copy.

The parks also run bus services; the VinWonders bus page and the VinBus route lookup are on the apps and maps page.

Hospital in the north-west

Vinmec Phu Quoc International Hospital is in the Bai Dai and Ganh Dau area. Its own page says it opened in June 2015 with nearly 150 beds and 10 specialties and arranges emergency transfers by road, air and helicopter. It is on the special zone's list of hospitals for tourist areas. For an emergency call 115 first.

When the north is a bad idea

The north is spread out. Ganh Dau is about 30 km from Duong Dong, and the forest roads are long and dark at night, so a day in the north needs a planned ride back; do not count on an app car appearing at the cape at dusk. If you are on the island for a short stay and want boats and the cable car, the north means a long drive to An Thoi each time.

In the rainy season the south-west wind brings big waves to Bai Dai and Ganh Dau, VnExpress has reported. Families who chose the north for the theme parks may still prefer to swim on the sheltered south-east coast; compare the An Thoi page and the Duong Dong page.
