Duong Dong and the central island

Duong Dong, on the west coast where the Duong Dong river meets the sea, is the island's main town. The special zone's offices, the public medical centre and the Dinh Cau shrine are here; the airport and Bai Vong ferry port lie a short drive inland and east.

Public offices and services in the town

Duong Dong was a ward until 1 July 2025 and is now part of Phu Quoc Special Zone, but the name is still used every day and on most signs. The special zone's administration and the island's public hospital are both on 30/4 Street.

The Medical Centre is the public facility for the whole island, with about 400 beds according to Tuổi Trẻ in August 2026. For emergencies call 115; the health and emergencies page lists the other hospitals and the visitor feedback lines.

Dinh Cau

Dinh Cau is the shrine on the rocks at the mouth of the Duong Dong river. The provincial tourism portal says it was built in 1937 and renovated about 60 years later, and adds that some accounts put its origins in the 17th century. Its page still gives the address as quarter 2 of the former Duong Dong township, Kien Giang. It is a place of worship as well as a viewpoint, so dress as you would for a temple.

Bai Truong, the west-coast beach

Bai Truong, often sold as Long Beach, runs south from the Dinh Cau headland. The provincial tourism portal gives it more than 20 km to Khoe Tau Ru and splits it into a northern stretch of about 5 km and a southern one of about 15 km reaching towards An Thoi. VnExpress has reported that in the rainy season the south-west wind brings strong wind, big waves and murky water to Bai Truong, Bai Dai and Ganh Dau, making them unsuitable for swimming then.

The night market: status unclear

The night market on Bach Dang street near Dinh Cau has been in question since its operator's lease ran out. Tiền Phong reported on 1 April 2026 that the operating company's 2016 lease had been settled on 31 December 2025, with a second lease for a smaller area running into 2026, and quoted the chairman of the special zone saying there was "no question of abolishing the night market" and that a new site was being studied. We have no newer official notice, so we give no opening hours. Ask at your hotel what is running in the week you are there.

The airport and Bai Vong port

The airport sits inland, in the Duong To area south-east of the town; its own transport page puts the taxi ride to Duong Dong at about 20–25 minutes. Bai Vong, where the fast boats and the car ferry from Rach Gia and Ha Tien arrive, is on the east coast in the former Ham Ninh commune. The car ferry company's site still gives the terminal address as Ham Ninh, Phu Quoc district, Kien Giang.

When Duong Dong is the wrong base

Duong Dong is convenient for the airport, the hospital and the offices, but it is not close to everything. The Ganh Dau cape in the north-west is about 30 km away, VnExpress reported, and Bai Sao on the south-east coast about 25 km, according to the provincial tourism portal. If your days will be spent on boats from An Thoi or on the Hon Thom cable car, the south saves a daily drive; if they will be spent in the national park or at the northern theme parks, the north does.

In the rainy season the south-west wind makes the west coast rough, which matters if you chose Duong Dong for swimming; VnExpress suggests the south-east coast around Bai Sao and Bai Khem then. Compare the An Thoi page and the north page before you book.
